in Point: Pearls and Perseverance explores the relationship between landscape, labor, memory, and the generations who have called Georgia's coast home.
Created as part of the Savannah Cartography Series, the painting is inspired by Pin Point, a historic Gullah-Geechee community established along the Moon River in the 1890s by formerly enslaved African Americans and their descendants. For generations, the marshes and tidal waterways surrounding the community provided food, work, and a way of life deeply connected to the rhythms of the coast.
At the center of the painting is one small object that carries much of that history: the oyster.
The painting begins with a luminous, pearlescent surface inspired by the inside of an oyster shell. Soft pinks, creams, lavender, blue, and gold move through the composition like light across coastal water. Above them, rough passages of impasto create an uneven, weathered surface recalling the exterior of the shell and the demanding work of generations who harvested and processed oysters and crabs along these waterways.
The contrast between the two became the visual language of the painting.
Roughness and luminosity. Labor and beauty. History held beneath the surface.
Through those layers, Pin Point reflects a community shaped by the marsh while honoring the cultural richness preserved through family, faith, food, language, storytelling, and generations of shared knowledge.
Like an oyster shell, the painting invites us to look more closely at what a place carries beneath its surface.
